Christmas Presents for Children under $10.00
December 18, 2007, 7:10 pm

Times are much harder nowadays than ever. Fortunately, it is still possible to find wonderful presents for children under $10 they will surely enjoy. Here are a couple of ideas to make Christmas shopping for children more affordable.

1. Buy seasonal accessories- Many stores sell glove and beanie sets between $8-$10.00. Some of them would even include a scarf. With all the sales going on nowadays, you can even find sweaters for $10.00 or less. Just keep an eye out for the child’s favorite character of color.

2. Arts and Crafts Kits- A few examples of these kits are jewelry making kits for girls, play dough, coloring kits with books, mini figuring painting kits, spin art, etc.

3. CDs or DvDs- It is still possible to find inexpensive, quality CDs and DVDs. You can go to Rite Aid, Walmart or Target for a wide selection. If you still can’t find the exact one you’re looking for, you can always try Amazon.com. You can get free shipping if you order enough items, or some vendors will sell you a product for about $5.00-$6.00 and ship it to you for less than $3.00.

4. Story Books/ Activity Books- You can find really great ones under $10.00 at the Bargain bins of Barnes and Noble or Borders. For the money you’re willing to spend, you might even be able to buy 2 books with your money.

5. Building Toys- From brand name toys like small Lego sets, to Konex, many toys are available under $10.00. They are mostly available at Target stores or KB toy stores.

6. Action Figures/ Dolls- Boys will appreciate a Spider man action figure while little girls will enjoy playing with a Barbie Doll. These are classics, and they are sure to please any child.

7. Snack Gift Package- You can always put together a snack pack and put it in either an inexpensive lunch box or plastic container. You can include some Fruit roll ups, Granola bars, Yogos, raisins, etc.

8. $10 Fast Food Gift Card- For child, a $10 fast food gift card can go a long way. Besides, they will enjoy being able to spend their own gift card the next time they go out.

9. Bath Sets- There are gift bath sets containing foam soap, a bubble bath and a toy for about $8.00 a piece at drug store chains. They have cool themes like Tinker bell, Shrek, Superman, etc. And lately, they’ve been advertising “Buy one get 2nd one half off.”

10. Slippers- There are a wide variety of comfortable slippers. There are many plain colored ones for the child who doesn’t like too much design. But there are also plenty of themed ones for children who likes characters like Hello Kitty, Elmo, Bob the builder, etc.

11. Pillows- Character or designed pillows are perfect for children. You can ask the parents what their bedroom theme is to give you an idea. If the little girl likes flowers or clouds, make sure you pick one in the right color scheme. Or if the little boy’s room is decorated with stars, or the solar system, a rocket ship pillow might be perfect for him.

12. Throw Blanket- There are plenty of throw blankets you can purchase for under $10.00. Some blankets even go on sale for three for $10.00 at certain stores like Big Lots or Walmart during the holiday season.

13. Outdoor Play Toys- These kind of toys are perfect to keep the children active during the holidays. You can get balls, a hula hoop, boomerang, Frisbee, etc.

14. Game Boards- Many toy stores or even drug stores sell game boards for a really good price. Connect Four, Checkers, Card games, and Snakes and Ladders are classic favorites. But of course, there are plenty of other ones that you can choose from.

15. Pajamas- Keeping a child warm in cozy pajamas is a great idea for a Christmas present. For younger children under age 5, stores like Carters or Children’s Place always have a good deal on pajamas. For older children, Target, Kmart and Walmart always have a fine selection to choose from.

Also, you can put small stickers on the dollar price. Or you can punch a hole on the price. You can leave it as is or…

A Word on Exchange Gifts

I remember back in the days when people would be told to bring an item that would have a Minimum Cap and they would go and get a present for at least that amount. Yes, some people still go by the rules.  Unfortunately, I’ve noticed in the last decade how things have changed.I’ve personally been a victim of unfair exchange gifts.

I remember a year when I attended a party that requested the gift to be at least $25 of value. What did we buy, a water filter pitcher. Yes it was $25 dollars! And what did we end up with? A small snowman pepper and salt shaker. What a JIP! I was very disappointed! It made me think, was this a joke? No cheap figurine salt and pepper shaker could be $25 dollars! And if it was, it didn’t look like it cost anything more than $7. Again, what a JIP!

Nowadays, there are two kinds of exchange gift trends I’ve been noticing. One is still the “bring a universal present with a minimum amount” or the “Secret Santa that they will list down a wish list of course with a minimum amount as well!”

In regards to the universal present trend that disappointed me, I guess not all people are guilty of giving less than the value required, or what’s worst is a present that you can’t use. But what’s to blame? Unfortunately, it’s bad taste and bad decision making on the giver’s side. I mean, there are plenty of items that you can get for even a low price but still look good. You just have to know where to go and what to get.
<p.
And now about the Secret Santa Exchange Gift. It’s pretty good I guess unless you specifically ask for particular items. That pretty much takes away from the suspense. I mean, if you say you want a Curve for Women cologne, or a $25 dollar Cheesecake Factory gift card. I think just ruins the fun of Exchange gifts.

This weekend, we attended a gift exchange with a $25 dollar universal gift minimum. We brought a digital photo keychain that retails at for $40 dollars. As it turns out, we were the only one who brought a present. Everyone else brought a $25 gift card to somewhere. I was torn. It was nice that people thought it was practical to just buy gift cards. But at the same time, so what’s the point of the Gift Exchange? People are just pretty much giving each other $25. They might as well not have bought gift cards and just stuck with the cash! hahaha!

There’s gotta be a better way! I think there should be a general list of gifts that people would appreciate that are collected from the entire group. They include household items they wouldn’t mind receiving starting from robes, to bed sheets, to throw blankets, particular DVDS, or CDs, etc. I know many people are busy nowadays and gift cards are great solutions, but people should be more creative.

There was a time when I was younger when my friends and I decided to have a $5.00- $10.00 gift exchange. The presents could be fun! I had a blast! Someone brought a big laundry basket with paper towels. Someone brought a disposable camera with a photo album and frame. Another fun one was a case of bottled water.

In conclusion, I really think Exchange Gifts should be fun! If you’re just gonna have one so you can have an activity even though the participants are not really gonna have the time to think about it, they might not really enjoy it as much!

Using Cellophane Bags

Cellophane bags are a lot cheaper than gift bags.  They’re also perfect for those hard to wrap little presents as well as baked goods.  As I started filling my cello bags, I realized how those twist ties (even though practical)  are making my present look tacky.  So, I decided to seal them this way instead.

Just fold over the top. Fold over a label on top, and staple.

It’s not too hard to make these, and it makes the present look more presentable. =)~kristine munda
